As a graduate student at Duke University, Ryder Buttry was completing her Master of Public Policy. She served as sub-team lead for the Oral History Policy sub-team. She worked on interviewing advocates and state officials about legislation and regulation leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. Her interests in consumer issues, economic equity, and financial regulation led her to join the team.
